Labrador Owners Club

Flat Coated Retriever Society of America
The Owners: Janet and Ted Levecque

The Beginning
At the start, I was working in a remote area of Northern Canada and never thought much about getting into dogs until my roommate at the time, an American Officer, got a pet Labrador for hunting, something that really did not interest me at the time. As it was, we lived in a wonderful area for hunting and fishing being remote from civilization and in an area of natural beauty, all anyone could ask for.

Another Airforce person got transferred to our base. He had a beautiful young Labrador bitch named Sheila. As he planned on living in the single men's quarters of the base, he could not keep her so he was looking for a home for her. I acquired Sheila by luck thus our foundation bitch in Labradors came to me. It wasn't until I met my wife, Janet, and we got married in October 1972, that our kennel was established.

Ch. Sheila Bel Narisco
Living in Northern Canada has some advantages but a lot of disadvantages, one being not having many suitable stud dogs around and no shows at all to meet other breeders. So it wasn't until we moved to Oakville, in Southern Ontario that we really became active both as breeders and exhibitors.
We were encouraged to show Sheila at the Labrador Owners' Club Specialty show in June of 1974, and in 1975 at the same Specialty show, we had our first big win with Sheila. She took Winners Bitch for five points. From then on we were hooked on shows. In 1976, Sheila became Ch. Sheila Bel Narisco.

Can./Am. Ch. Casuarina Nootka of Jantel (Nootka)

Our first Flat-coated Retriever
While living in Oakville, Ontario in 1975, we bought our first Flat-coated Retriever as our second breed. She became Can./Am. Ch. Casuarina Nootka of Jantel (Nootka), the first Flat-coat to become an American Champion with three five-point major wins. The first of these was under Gwen Broadley of the famous Sandylands Labradors in Britain. The second was when she won Best of Breed at the 1st American National Specialty in 1978 under Reed Flowers of Britain.

Can./Am Ch Branchalwood Feochan T.T. (Laird)
In 1977, we imported a male Flat-coated Retriever from Scotland. He became Can./Am. Ch. Branchalwood Feochan T.T. (Laird). Laird and Nootka were bred together and our first Flat-coated Retriever litter was born in 1979. Five bitches from that breeding became Champions and the foundation stock for Petersfield Flat-coats in Connecticut and Fleetwing in Nova Scotia as well as other kennels and continuing our Flat-coat line over the years.

Ch. Strinesdale Jon-Jo (Crispin)
Our first imported Labradors
In 1984 we imported a black Labrador bitch from Britain. She became Ch. Strinesdale Midnight Pearl (Pearl). Then in 1987 we imported a black male from the same kennel and he became Ch. Strinesdale Jon-Jo (Crispin). These two dogs helped us to establish our modern line of British type Labradors which include Ch. Jantel's Wick Fiddler (Willie) who was 4th top winning Labrador in Canada in 1994; Ch. Jantel's Kelso (Kelso), Ch. Jantel's Brechin (Robbie) and many, many more. To see pictures of some of our dogs, see the Photo Gallery and Show Winners links. Our homebred puppies all have Scottish names.

Current Activities
From that time to the present, we have moved twice, each time to larger property, always looking for suitable accommodation for the dogs, yet still within commuting distance to Toronto where we both worked. We live on approximately 26 acres of land on the edge of a conservation area near the Village of Belwood in Southern Ontario, a good area for the dogs, with a nice spring-fed pond for swimming.

We try to breed quality English-type Labradors. We give a two-year written guarantee for hips, elbows and eyes with all of our puppies.

Janet is a Canadian Kennel Club Conformation Judge for the Sporting Group and has judged in the Irish Republic, Great Britain and the United States. We are both retired from active work, so we get to spend more time with our dogs.

Over the last 10 years, we have donated 53 puppies to Canine Vision Canada to be trained as guide dogs for the blind.

Our breeding program continues.
